'Centodue - The Journey Continues'

at Niagara Image Gallery

Niagara This Week – Richard Hutton ‘Centodue - The Journey Continues’ on display July 27 - September 7th 2018 at Niagara Image Gallery.

The anxious artist

Richard Hutton

Filomena Pisano was visiting her sister in Niagara-on-the-Lake when she was blindsided by a panic attack.

“My sister and her husband had just moved in and there was no TV, no internet,” Pisano recalls of the incident two years ago. “I started to sketch, it was very relaxing.”

Back home in Woodbridge, Ont., Pisano came across Patton Oswalt’s story of grief over the loss of his wife and his subsequent journey to resume his career in comedy. She found it inspiring.

“I imagined being focused on one thing,” she says. “I went into solitude for 102 days. I would sketch for three to 12 hours a day. I didn’t stop.”

Pisano began posting photos of her work to her Instagram page, leading to a local pizzeria discovering her work and requesting to display one of her sketches in the store. It was then things kicked into high gear for the 57-year-old Pisano.

“Since then I have been painting formally,” she says.

And now, Pisano is showcasing her work at the Niagara Image Gallery in Virgil. The gallery is the home of notable local artists, Trish Romance, Tanya Jean Peterson, Jordan Morrison and Alex Colville. Peterson, as it turns out, was instrumental in helping to guide Pisano’s path from panic to Centodue — The Journey Continues exhibit, which will be on display at the gallery until Sept. 7.

“Tanya said that I should make some prints,” Pisano says.
